Connecting researchers with the compute they need

Announcement: Microgrid Working Group

The Mission: Develop a plan for a project which connects researchers with distributed computing requirements to public distributed computing platforms such as BOINC and also connects volunteer computing participants to those researchers' distributed computing work.

In other words: We want to build a BOINC project (unless there is a better immediate practical solution) that helps researchers develop distributed computing applications for their work. We then want to host that work on our BOINC server and get it crunched by the BOINC network. A... Micro Grid/Distributed computing project for researchers with some, but not a ton of computational requirements... if you will.

Step 1: Scope of work. We need to define exactly what this project and program will look like. How will the server be hosted? How will we develop the applications? What will be required? How will we identify, build, and maintain relationships with researchers? What other questions do we need to answer? Etc.

Resources: For now this work is voluntary, but we have loosely budgeted several thousand dollars as a starting point for the program once we have a scope of work.

Who can join the working group?: Anyone! We will largely be picking up steam after the new year, but are planning a few small discussions in December.

Reach out on The SCI Discord server or email contact@thesciencecommons.org to get involved.
